UK horizon scanning and HTA activities
- NIHR Evaluation, Trials and Studies Coordinating Centre (NETSCC)
NETSCC manages research programmes for the NIHR including the Health Technology Assessment; Public Health Research; and the Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation programmes.
- National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
NICE is responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health, and preventing and treating ill-health.
- United Kingdom Medicines Information (UKMi)
UKMi produces a range of information on new products, covering early horizon scanning intelligence on drugs in clinical development through to evaluations of medicines once marketed.
- UK PharmaScan
UK PharmaScan is a secure horizon scanning database populated by manufacturers with information on new medicines in development from up to three years before their launch in the UK or start of phase III clinical development, whichever is the earlier. UKPharmaScan is designed to reduce duplication of information provided to UK horizon scanning organisations and to support better NHS planning for the introduction of new medicines to patients.
- National Prescribing Centre (NPC)
The NPC develops and delivers evidence based information, education and training materials, and implementation tools that help to improve front-line services and ensure value for money where medicines are involved.
- Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Horizon scanning is used by the HSE to ensure that it is aware of developments, trends and changes in the medium to long-term future that could impact on health and safety in Britain.
- Health Protection Agency – Rapid Review Panel
The panel provides a prompt assessment of new and novel equipment, materials and other products that may be of value to the NHS in improving hospital infection control and reducing hospital acquired infections.
- National Genetics Reference Laboratories
The specific remit of the laboratories include Health Technology Assessment, development of new External Quality Systems, development of reference reagents and control and advice to government and other bodies.
- Office of Science and Technology (OST) Horizon Scanning Centre
The Centre’s aims are to support horizon scanning carried out by others inside and outside government, and to spot the implications of emerging science and technology to enable others to act upon them.
